Day 128 Thursday 04th August 2011
My Little Friend….
Let me tell you a little story….
When my partner and I moved in to the building that we currently live in, 3 years ago, underneath the building is the carpark for the residents, but not only the human residents who reside in the apartments above, but also a family of swallows, who decided to make the actual carpark their home.
They have lived here for as long we have, well, longer. Each year, we marvel at their skills of improving their nest – adding extensions, so that it’s large enough for the chicks when they hatch. Their nest is built against a small waterpipe, which must keep the nest nice and cosy for the little ones. Each year we hear the chicks chirping, hungry for their supper. Each year, we come home from work, or from a weekend away to find that the chicks have managed to leave their nest and now perch actually on the pipe. Then days later, each year, we watch them fly like little squadrons past our window.
I love them. I do. It has to be said. I feel such a huge connection with them. They always always make me smile and they always lighten my day when I see them as we go to/from our car. I always acknowledge them and say hello, they are never ignored by me.
When we decide to find somewhere else to live, I know that I will really miss these dear little birds.
They may be little – but they are a big part of me. I will always remember them.
A little birdie told me that it’s the little things that make you smile.
This photo was taken in the carpark tonight, after a long day at work.
